Jidenna & Nana Kwabena Dish Up A Stylish New Mixtape For Okayafrica

Okayafrica have truly outdone themselves with the latest installment of their Africa In Your Earbuds mixtape series, bringing in the Wondaland wunderkind Jidenna and Nana Kwabena to compose an extra-stylish set. From Nigerian remixes of Rihanna to classic Kuti to the irresistible modern dance inflections of Ghanian artists, the mix is a brilliant survey of African rhythms past and present. In an email to Okayafrica, both Jidenna and Nana extolled the longstanding influence of African music, stressing that in the last five years the North American scene specifically has benefitted from “a wave of African culture in the American marketplace.”

“Africa has long embraced American pop culture and previous American generations have reciprocated that appreciation, particularly within music. From Quincy Jones’ and Michael Jackson‘s cultivation of “Off The Wall” and “Thriller” to Paul McCartney‘s weeping after witnessing Fela play for the first time, to James Brown sending his arranger to The Shrine in Lagos to study Tony Allen‘s drum grooves,” the duo wrote.
