OKP Premiere: Shan Vincent de Paul Dedicates “Humble” To West Coast Hip-Hop

Shan Vincent - Premiere

Sri Lanka born, Toronto-based Shan Vincent de Paul has impacted the 6ix greatly with his brand of innovative musicianship. Today, we’re excited to showcase his new work, “Humble,” which is pegged to his debut album, Saviors.

After gaining traction in the industry with songs such as “Die Iconic” and “Thank God,” Shan Vincent de Paul puts his eclectic sound and look on full display. A refugee from civil war, SVDP fled his native land with his family, eventually emigrating to Toronto where he’s now based. We spoke with the inspiring innovator about the origins of “Humble,” of which he said, “This is my ode to the West. I grew up studying the Hieroglyphics crew, Kurupt, DJ Quik, E-40, Ras Kass, The Pharcyde and that entire movement.”

SVDP routinely explores themes like religion, spirituality and culture, yet on “Humble,” he channels Miles Davis and Kanye West in offering some really dope lyricism. “It wasn’t until I delved into West Coast music that I learned how fearless and free you could be with style and cadence. You can’t deny the funk,” he told us exclusively. SVDP is a perfect example as to how cultural influences, no matter where they originate from, can mix and mingle to create an unique take on style and sound.

Check out the fourth single from Shan’s debut album, Saviors, which will hit stores on April 15, 2016, and is available for pre-sale now. You can listen to the captivating track, “Humble,” below!

Questlove Helps Bid Farewell To ‘The Champs’ On Their Final Transmission

Nelly, John Legend, Jeremih + More Rock Night 1 Of Roots Jam Session 2016 In L.A.

Questlove and The Champs have always had something special. Amongst their countless guests (which includes Trevor Noah, Tracy Morgan, Jerrod Carmichael, Black Thought, Action Bronson and plenty more) it’s been Questo’s industry stories and requited admiration for the hosting trio (comprised Neal Brennan, Moshe Kasher and DJ Douggpound) that has made for some of its most memorable moments.

Yesterday, the titillating three-piece reunited to deliver, sadly, their final transmission across the inter-waves, inviting Questo back to help sign the show off forevermore with a litany of his terrific tales. The show is available in its entirety for you to hear below, but don’t you worry, this won’t be the last we hear from The Champs. Currently, Neal Brennan is performing his one-man, three-mic show at NYC’s Lynn Redgrave Theater in SOHO, while Kasher has his very own Hound Tall podcast in rotation over at Nerdist and DJ Douggpound is holding down his editing gigs on Adult Swim’s Tim & Eric and IFC’s Portlandia. Let’s all raise a glass for the hilarity they’ve provided us with over the years. Jump back to Questlove’s last appearance on the show by hitting their archive. Long live, The Champs.

OKP Premiere: SassyBlack Announces New Album + “New Boo” As First Single

SassyBlack-Premiere-No-More-Lame-Dates-New-Boo-Single

Whenever one hears the timbre and sexiness of SassyBlack‘s voice, one is bound to reach a higher plane. As the singing half of THEESatisfaction, Catherine “Cat” Harris-White‘s insights have made her a cherished guest spot on any track. And after her 2015 release, Personal Sunlight, MamaGhana is back again with another astral offering. We here at OKP are proud to announce the release date for No More Lame Dates and its first single, “New Boo,” plus the project’s artwork.

The semi-autobiographical work is slated to be available on May 17th, but we couldn’t let Black History Month go without giving you that strain of rap&B that you all know and love. So, “New Boo” places the listener in the role of a potential suitor for our cosmic cutie and she examines just what it is like to be embedded in the single life. “The dating world can be rather frustrating and confusing, you know,” SassyBlack told us exclusively. “So many beauties, booties and bombshells — how to choose, how to choose?”

No More Lame Dates Artwork1

Cat, who produced “New Boo” and the entire album, wanted to make song that poked fun at the concept of looking for love with spacey, pop, R&B vibes. “Essentially, all that anyone wants in life is their one, or sometimes multiple lover(s) to hold them down. With that in mind, the understanding that each day brings a new interaction, I posed the question — could you be my new boo?” Despite most pundits categorizing her music into a certain box, SassyBlack breaks out in an imaginative way with hypnotic hooks and earthly wisdom that is sure to entertain utopian music lovers.

We were fortunate enough to hear No More Lame Dates in advance and we have to say she’s as unforgettable as ever. On certain tracks, she flutters like a nimble butterfly on easy, breezy Saturday morning. On others, she’s slippery as an eel, hard to catch as she emotes style and swag as the music requires.

Without spoiling anything for the listener, get a preview of No More Lame Dates by listening to “New Boo,” checking out the artwork and viewing the upcoming tour dates, below. Also, if you want to get your hands on No More Lame Dates early, here’s the pre-sale link HERE!

Hear 3-Minutes Of New Music From Frank Ocean In A Freshly-Leaked Snippet

Even with the final call on Kanye’s “Wolves” coming from a long-searched-for Frank Ocean, fans have had little, if anything, to work with from the infamous recluse since his new album’s July release date came and went. But that certainly hasn’t quelled the anticipation for new joints from your boy.

In the wee hours of this morning, Team Frank Daily uploaded a lo-fi, cell-phone-ish recording of what appears to be some fresh heat from Frank spitting some bars of whirls of murky organs and for roughly three minutes. No word on who we truly have to thank for this but, but even in lo-fi, new Frank Ocean sounds just right. While you still can, peep the snippet down below and hold tight for the next transmission from the Channel Orange specialist. And cross your fingers, along with the rest of us, that Boys Don’t Cry finally makes it way off the cutting room floor in 2016. Those looking to keep tabs on Franks new album are encouraged to follow this Twitter account for all of the hearbreak and hilarity. We’re pulling for you.

Sango’s Latest Drop Will Screw Up Your Face In All Of The Right Ways

Sango - "Life Without God Is Nothing"

Fresh off the road in support of his fantastically frisky Da Rochina III LP, Sango has arrived back in the states (or wherever he lays his head) bearing some neck-breaking frequencies. Those that thought your boy was only good for the bossa-spiced bangers every now and then will find “Life Without God Is Nothing” to be a particularly pleasing treat, putting his own personal spin on chipmunk-voices soul-sampling, yet lacing the cut with all-too-familiar chants and yells that have been become hallmark to the sleeping giant of the beat scene. The track is tagged “#ALBUMMATERIAL,” which could be a good sign for those of us looking for a long-form release.

Wyatt Cenac’s New Stand-Up Album ‘Furry Dumb Fighter’ Is Here + Sharp As Ever

Wyatt Cenac's Sophomore Comedy Album 'Fury Dumb Fighter' Is Here

Over the past year, Wyatt Cenac has been more vocal and visible than ever. Even without a recurring spot on The Daily Show, the subversive funnyman has solidified his presence on a forthcoming otherworldly comedy, filmed a new comedy special and took his first trip to the Grammys for the nomination of his last special, Brooklyn (which is currently streaming on Netflix.) He didn’t come home with the gold, but it seems that hasn’t deterred him from continuing to dominate his corner of the comedic realm. Today, Cenac releases his second stand-up album, Furry Dumb Fighter, tackling internet etiquette, the Kardashian complex, police brutality, the inherent rudeness of slavery and plenty more head-on with his patented sharpness and irreverence.

Stream Wyatt Cenac’s new album in side-splitting entirety below, take it home with you on iTunes and if you’re looking to catch the man live-and-direct, catch him in Brooklyn at Littlefield on February 29th and March 7th or at Bell House on March 1st or 8th. You can also see him discuss his Grammy dance on Conan in the player below. Here’s hoping he takes the trip next year as well (though he doesn’t seem too convinced that’ll be the case.)

Chance The Rapper Lands On Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' New Truth-Seeking Single

Tomorrow, the long-awaited (agonized over) new Macklemore & Ryan Lewis album, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, will finally land on digital physical stands across the globe. We’ve heard album cuts assisted by KRS-One & DJ Premier, as well as the young and gifted, Jamila Woods. Just in case you’re not yet sick of all of the “Waves,” Tame Impala has come through with their own take on Miguel‘s raunch Wildheart standout. DJ Premier Has His Way With The “I Love Kanye” A Cappella

DJ Premier Has His Way With The "I Love Kanye" A Capella

Ever since the arrival of Kanye West‘s The Life Of Pablo LP, DJ and producers of all rankings have been trying their hand at accompanying the album’s self-adulating ode “I Love Kanye” with their very sonic suites. There was, of course, the inevitable and totally expected Seinfeld theme mash, but it certainly didn’t stop there. Everyone from Hezekiah to Stefan Ponce have put their own spins on TLOP‘s mid-album love-fest.

Today, however, a tried and true legend steps into the arena. The mighty DJ Premier has relinquished his very own treatment for “I Love Kanye,” pairing Ye’s bars with a track that is supremely Preemo with its creeping piano lick and slow-knocking kick and snare, no hi-hat necessary. The track is available for you to hear below and add to your “I Love Kanye” compilation album (wait, that’s actually a fantastic idea — who’s go the hook-up?!) For those looking to catch DJ Premier in-the-flesh, you’ll have to track him down in either LA (March 11th at The Belasco Theater) or Belgium (July 14th at Festival Dour,) neither of which are a cheap ticket. Here’s hoping the “I Love Kanye” train never comes to its end.

Starchild & The New Romantic’s “Woman’s Dress” Is Purple-Crushed Pop w/ A Deep Cool

Starchild & The New Romantic's "Woman's Dress" Is Purple-Crushed Pop w/ A Deep Cool

Amongst r&b’s new constellation, multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter, Bryndon Cook AKA Starchild, shines as one of its brightest stars. He’s backed Dev Hynes as a vocalist in Blood Orange, put his axe to work as the guitarist in Solange‘s band and buzzed up a storm here in Brooklyn as one of the most potent live performers out, and all without even a record on stands. Next month, Cook’s new crew, Starchild & The New Romantic will release their CRUCIAL EP. Today, however, he clues into precisely what he can expect with the sprawled-out and tender new ballad, “Woman’s Dress”; a lovelorn lament of Prince-like proportions, crushed with velvety vox and swirls of lo-fi synth elements. And if it serves as any indication of what’s to come, Starchild just might be your next r&b infatuation.

Hear the new single from Starchild & The New Romantic below and for the necessary and proper live introduction, catch the crew at Brooklyn’s Baby’s Alright on March 12th. Their debut CRUCIAL EP is due out March 18th via Ghostly with pre-orders already underway. Check back with us for his next transmission.

M.I.A. Puts The NFL On Blast w/ ‘Matangi’ Update “Boom ADD”

M.I.A. Puts The NFL On Blast w/ 'Matangi' Update "Boom ADD"

By now, it should be well-known just how mutual of a distaste M.I.A. and the NFL have between one another. Their not-so-private spat dates back to the Sri Lankan artist’s Super Bowl halftime show, where she capped off the performance by flipping the bird on camera. The league immediately filed a claim for $1.5 million in damages for violating a contract that stipulated their performers were to abide by a strict code of conduct, adding an ungodly $15.1 million in fines two years later when the matter had yet to be resolved. The league and M.I.A. came to an undisclosed settlement later that year (2014) but the bad blood has yet to be squashed in any shape or form

Perhaps this is best expressed by M.I.A. herself in the freshly-released update to her Matangi album interlude, “Boom Skit.” On the revamped take, “Boom ADD,” our femme fatale pulls no punches and makes her stance crystalline with a fiery barrage of verbal daggers aimed directly at the league. Clearly, she’s still got some words for the gridiron league. But y’all already knew that. Peep M.I.A.’s ferocious “Boom ADD” below. Keep it locked for more from the goddess MC in the weeks and months ahead.

NAO Returns w/ Sleek, Swaggering New Single

Rejoice, good people! New music from future r&b specialist, NAO, has arrived. After teasing us with the subversive and stunning “Bad Blood” video late last year (and racking up a few end-of-year superlatives, for that matter,) NAO has returned with a whole new flame, sharing the slippery and sleek new single, “Fool To Love,” with the masses. For those familiar with the edgy r&b stylings of NAO, the track should feel right at home, with NAO’s flush falsetto mirroring a relentless bass line and fuzzy guitar lick; a compositional constant we imagine was picked up during her time in the studio with the other Paul brother, AK Paul.

And while there’s no official word on when we expect her full-length debut album to arrive, things are certainly looking and sounding promising, especially when you consider the grip of springtime tour dates that she’s announced, which are listed in their entirety below. Hear the swaggeringly confident new joint from NAO and hold tight for the British upstart’s next transmission.

Tour Dates:
04-20 Birmingham, England – Institute 3
04-21 Manchester, England – Deaf Institute
04-22 Nottingham, England – Bodega Social Club

Never-Before-Heard MC Hammer Song Written By Tupac Has Surfaced

MC-Hammer-Tupac-Shakur-Too-Tight-Death-Row

The mythos of Tupac Shakur and MC Hammer are intertwined and prolific to the story of hip-hop. The ties that bind these two together comes when the former signed to Death Row, which featured the latter as another signee. In that time after Shakur’s release from prison, he went into overdrive that has since influenced every lyricist from Lil’ Wayne to Kendrick Lamar.

According to reports and video, a part of Tupac’s deal with Death Row included writing and recording songs for other Death Row acts. MC Hammer was included in this energetic burst of creativity from 2Pac, as the “California Love” MC had enough material for a double album, several posthumous albums and several songs for Hammer’s Too Tight album.

Over the years, the legend of the MC Hammer x Tupac recording session has had video footage and eye witness accounts surface. This week, a CDQ quality version of the track “Too Tight” surfaced and can be heard in its entirety below. Back when this was being record, ‘Pac can be seen behind the boards with Jose Fuentes, producing a reference track for Hammer that was being played in the background. Another song, “Too Late Playa” was also recorded which featured Big Daddy Kane.

From the VHS-styled playback to the 1995 vibe in the studio, “Too Tight” sounds like a worthy addition to MC Hammer’s brand. It’s a shame that the album never seen the light of day, but after hearing this version of the track — you should press play immediately. If you can guess the sample, you could possibly win something cool from us here at OKP!

Listen to MC Hammer’s “Too Tight” and enjoy this wistful Wednesday by chatting with us @Twitter!

Premiere: Stream SAD’s Neo-Soulmatic New Album ‘SLOW’ feat. Slum Village

Slum Village Join Bernese Producer SAD On Organic New LP

Gotta give it to the Slum Village crew, even in their Jay Dee-less days, they’ve managed to curate and contribute to some of the most compelling hip-hop releases of the year. Stream Volume 2 Of J Dilla's Posthumous 'King Of Beats' Tape

It’s been a bittersweet month for J Dilla fans across the globe. On the 7th, we celebrated what would have been the legend’ 42nd birthday. Three days later, we memorialized ten years with his parting opus, Donuts. Then just last week, it was revealed that the estate, in partnership with Mass Appeal Records, would release his long-lost vocal album, The Diary, which is currently slated for an April 15th drop.

Today, however, we have on oddly under-the-radar release to share with you, as The King Of Beats Vol. 2: Lost Scrolls surfaced on Spotify and iTunes unbeknownst to us or damn-near anyone in the world. According to iTunes, the album was released last Friday, February 19th via Yancey Media Group/Official Ma Dukes, yet the word was mum, likely for the purpose of bringing attention to The Diary. But for those, like myself, who prefer to hear Dilla’s chop untouched, this here’s the one for you, comprised 18 rare instrumentals, some the devout will find familiar, others that will certainly be new to you. Stream the album in its entirety below and once you’ve had your fill, take it home with you by picking up a copy on iTunes today.

Hear Kaytranada & BADBADNOTGOOD’s Bass-Heavy Remix Of Jamie Woon’s “Sharpness”

Hear Kaytranada & BADBADNOTGOOD's Bass-Heavy Remix Of Jamie Woon's "Sharpness"

Well, it’s roughly 6PM on the east coast and that means that, hopefully, most of y’all have either just clocked-out or are anxiously inching towards the final bell. But what better way to wind down the workday, than some fresh(-ish) Kaytranda? Today, the north-of-the-border beat-freaker dropped off yet another lovely re-freak, this time around, with Jamie Woon‘s “Sharpness” in his crosshairs. With BADBADNOTGOOD handling the drums, the pair of Canadian mainstays give the minimalistic r&b of Woon’s cut a seemingly endless low-end with jazzy touches and a relentless shuffle.

Kaytra’s been a dominant force in music throughout the past few years (landing cuts on albums from Anderson .Paak, Wiki, The Internet and plenty more) and with this latest outing, he proves that 2016 will likely show itself to be just as prolific. Hear Kaytranada & BADBADNOTGOOD’s bass-heavy remix of Jamie Swoon’s “Sharpness” below and for those looking to see the man do work in-the-flesh, you can catch him under the Philly sun at our very own Roots Picnic on June 4th. Willow Smith Was Writing R&B Gems In Electric Lady Studios At 12-Years-Old

Willow Smith Was Writing R&B Gems In Electric Lady Studios At 12-Years-Old

“I recorded this song in Jimi Hendrix’s studio in NY when I was 12.”

If you’ve been paying even the faintest bit of attention to young Willow Smith over the last six months (and really her entire post-“Whip My Hair” career,) it’s been easy to see and hear just how far she’s come as a songwriter and vocalist, wielding uncharacteristically mature takes on r&b and hip-hop for an adolescent. Today, the heiress to Bel Air resurfaces with yet another testament to her growth, releasing the quiet storm-esque track, “JIMI,” which she claims was written when she was just 12-years-old while in the house that Hendrix built (Electric Lady Studios.) It’s a warm reminder that the youngest Smith is gaining ground in a hurry and that heads should take heed.

Hear Willow Smith up the ante with “JIMI” below. If you’re looking to catch her live and direct, look no farther than this year’s Roots Picnic, where she’ll be joining the likes of Future, Usher, Anderson .Paak, Kaytranada and plenty more. Grab a copy of her surprise ARDIPITHECUS LP on iTunes today.

Hezekiah – “I Love Kanye” (Pro Remix)

Hezekiah Flips An A Capella Track From Kanye West's 'The Life Of Pablo' LP With The Chop Heavy "I Love Kanye" (Remix).

Hezekiah serves up his take on a track from Kanye West‘s The Life of Pablo LP with the chop heavy “I Love Kanye” (Pro Remix). Combining the “I Love Kanye” a capella with a sample of Joslyn Brown‘s “Somebody Else’s Guy,” Hez delivers a hard hitting rendition that dials back Brown’s boogie to play up the gospel drenched funk and trunk backbone of Ye’s latest release. The end result is a dense groove that pays tribute to the “Old Kanye” and his soul sample roots. Check the track below to listen to the “I Love Kanye” (Pro Remix). Grab the remix via Bandcamp. Kendrick Lamar & Ice Cube Jump On Funkadelic’s “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard on You?”

kendrick-and-george-clinton

George Clinton and Kendrick Lamar arguably made some of the funkiest music with songs from the Grammy award winning album, To Pimp A Butterfly. Now, the young OG is paying it forward by lacing a new verse on Funkadelic’s remix to “Ain’t That Funkin’ Kinda Hard on You?”

Originally this cut was featured on the three-disc effort, First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate, which came out back in 2014. In September of 2015, the group then let loose the Louie Vega remix that had the Cornrow Kenny verse. To make the song even harder on the funk dial, future Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Famer Ice Cube adds a new verse to the cut.

Both verses definitely deserve a listen, if you haven’t played this numerous times already, as the N.W.A. lyricist raps about his son, O’Shea Jackson, Jr., kook-aid and his rough-as-sandpaper persona. With that straight-to-the-point flow that you’ve come to expect and love from these two rappers, hip-hop fans should know that this is not the first time that Cube and the Atomic Dog have been on a record togethers.

Back in 1994, the tandem did a song “Bop Gun” (One Nation) on Ice Cube’s Lethal Injection album. Everyone should also know that the funk god and Compton’s own superstar worked together on “Wesley’s Theory” and George cameoed in the “King Kunta” video.

Listen to the sincerely dope track, below:

Watch Questlove Hit The Skins w/ USC’s Trojan Drumline On ‘The Tonight Show’

Watch Questlove Hit The Skins w/ The USC Trojans Drumline On 'The Tonight Show'

Here at OKP HQ, we have only one resident drummer and you just might know his name: Questlove. As the bandleader for The Roots and music director for their immutable Tonight Show presence, Questlove has slapped skins with/for some of the best in the business; a list that would take more than just these few hundred words to properly flesh-out.

Last night, Questo stepped into the arena with an entirely different sort of ensemble, fulfilling the dreams of USC’s Trojan drumline by duking it out with them live and direct on The Tonight Show during the crew’s west coast stay. Commencing with a little call-and-response action, Questo and USC’s Trojans played off each other’s routines before joining in rhythmic matrimony to close out the affair. And best of all, it’s available for you to see and hear for yourself just below. Watch as Questlove duels the USC drumline on The Tonight Show and hold tight for the next west coast transmission from Questo and the gang. Here’s hoping this is far from the last time the two meet on late night, or anywhere for that matter.

The track arrives on the heels of the album’s slow-burning lead-off single, “Cosmic Love,” and proves to be yet another clue that his next outing will be a formidable one.

Hear Mayer Hawthorne’s latest drop along with the full track list for Man About Town below, but for a full dose of the yacht rock feels, catch him at Madison Square Garden tonight supporting Hall & Oates (who have just unveiled plans to tour the states this summer.) The after-party will follow at Brooklyn Bowl with a DJ set from Hawthorne. Pre-order a copy of his new album on iTunes today ahead of its official release.

Prince’s Vanity-Inspired ’80s Gem “Wonderful Ass” Surfaces And It’s Marvelous

Prince's Vanity-Inspired "Wonderful Ass" Surfaces And It's

Suppose we all should know too well by now that when it comes to Prince‘s music, the vault is beyond knee-deep. It’s a got damn trove of funky excellence, existing in the nooks and crannies of the internet, found only by those with the monk-like patience and determination. And every one in a while, someone actually turns up with a clean-ish copy of some ungodly funk from The Purple One (see: “Thrill You Or Kill You.”)

Today, someone dug deep into those internet coves and came out with something truly spectacular and particularly timely; his allegedly Vanity-inspired funk romp, “Wonderful Ass,” presumably an ode to his late protege’s…silhouette. According to the good folks at PrinceVault, the track was originally recorded in ’83, then expanded upon by The Revolution’s Wendy & Lisa in ’86, which is the version we have for you today. It’s a reminder of the bond they shared early on in their careers as we continue to commemorate the late Vanity, gone far too soon. Hear Prince’s scandalously infectious ’86 rarity, “Wonderful Ass,” below and hold tight for the next relic of “genius-era” P to surface by way of the mighty mighty internets.

A Ton Of Demos Have Leaked From Kanye West’s ‘The Life Of Pablo’ Sessions

Hear An Album's Worth Of Demos From Kanye West's 'TLOP'

Just in case you haven’t had your fill of new joints from Kanye West, the Internet has got you covered. Following the release of his work-in-progress (re: “Ima fix wolves”) seventh studio album, The Life Of Pablo, Kanye and Kanye-isms have conquered the weird and wild web. Today, the conversation gets a little more interesting with the leak of almost an entire album’s worth of new-ish material and demos from/for Pablo. Many of them match the sonic qualities and themes of the new album, but with unfinished vocals and arrangements. The demos include album cuts “FML,” “Waves,” “Wolves,” “Fade” and “Highlights,” but it’s the three unheards that make this a particularly enticing haul. Along with the demos, the tracks “Fall Out Of Heaven,” “New Angels” and “The Mind Is Powerful” have also surfaced, extending The Life Of Pablo well beyond its already lengthy 58-minute run-time. All of the tracks are available for you to stream and download below, but we suggest you get to it and quick. This is the internet after all. Grab a grip of demos from Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo sessions below and hold tight for his next rant, arriving imminently.
