The General Data Protection Regulation: where we stand and what it means for your business

In January 2012, the European Commission proposed a comprehensive reform of data protection rules in the EU. The objective of this new set of rules is to review the tools available for citizens to control over their personal data, and to review the regulatory environment for businesses.

As the completion of the reform is a key policy priority, the institutions are working intensively to reach an agreement and finalise the Regulation before December 2015.

Positions have already been taken on the topics “territorial scope” and “data transfer to third countries”. Other issues have been prepared and will be discussed in the upcoming Trilogue meeting, happening on 16th/17th September 2015.

The Institutions will focus on Chapter II, specifically on data processing principles, rights of data subjects and obligations of controllers and processors.
