Hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is the intensely funky band you might remember covered 50 Cent‘s version of “P.I.M.P.” back in 2008. BRSB are back once again with another trip down Funky Lane with their long-awaited debut full-length, 55, which is out May 5th on Brooklyn’s own Big Crown Records. After establishing themselves as an airtight sound, powered by The One, BRSB has made serious noise in the record collecting underground.

The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band dig a bit deeper than the average steel drum band with their signature funk smothered all over this new release. The A-Side features the group tackling Dennis Coffey‘s 1971 stone-cold groove, “Scorpio” from the LP, Evolution. A standout on the B-Side is the down-and-dirty funk that emanates from 55 in the form of Hi-Tek‘s “Round & Round,” which is an unforgettable song from the Cincinnati producer’s Hi-Teknology album.

You can be confident in knowing that both cuts will ignite any dance floor. 55 is the perfect soundtrack for any hot summer night. Now, all we need is for this weather to change so we can enjoy the steel pan melodies through and through. Credit veteran bandleader Björn Wagner – founder of Germany’s Mighty Mocambos – for bringing these fascinating sounds to life on this new album. With more than a dozen expert instrumentalists, this “truly unique, ultra-funky and raw sound” is ready to pollenate the earholes of funk lovers from coast to coast.

The brand-new, Brooklyn-based, vinyl-centric venture from Big Crown Records marks a new era for music fans around the world. “We’re super excited about Big Crown,” says former Truth & Soul Records head honcho, Danny Akalepse. “It’s been in the works for more than a year now. We have a lot of new music just waiting, from artists people know us for, and a bunch of new artists signed to the label. No specific genre, just music that we love, stuff we believe in.” Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band has received positive responses from funk fans around the world since 2007 when they unveiled their first two records, covers of The Meters, “Look A-Py-Py” and “Ease Back” on 45, self-released.

As Wagner and Akalepse continue to fuel the sound that keeps renowned record collectors on their toes, you can get familiar (or re-acquainted) with their “Bacao Suave” by streaming 55 below + purchasing here.
