OKP Exclusive: Freeway Talks Kidney Failure, Dialysis And ‘Free Will’ LP [Album Stream]

OKP Exclusive: Freeway Talks Kidney Failure, Dialysis And 'Free Will' Album

[UPDATE: Stream Freeway’s new Free Will mixtape down below]

Last September, the hip-hop community was still reeling from the passing of Brooklyn’s own Sean Price when news broke that Freeway suffered kidney failure. The soon-to-be 38-year-old Philadelphia MC was rushed to the hospital to receive an emergency dialysis treatment. His story was much like mine in that I had an emergency surgery to be placed on dialysis in 2012. As a kidney patient of almost four years, I was shocked to find out how many people are in the same boat as myself and Freeway that goes almost unnoticed by the general public.

One in three American adults are currently, at this moment, at risk for developing kidney disease. Most don’t even know it. I was fortunate to learn that my condition was life-altering, but due to the ignorance of youth I felt that I could beat it on strength alone. Freeway thought the same way and we both experienced the same result. While I chose the path of peritoneal dialysis—which is basically home dialysis—Freeway went the way of hemodialysis. For those unaware of these processes, these are the ways to keep the functions of a failing kidney going while awaiting a transplant.

The Philadelphia spitter and I are a part of a club where we must fight everyday against a disease that is ranked as the ninth leading cause of death in the United States. Since being diagnosed, Freeway has become an advocate doing his part to raise awareness on kidney failure and dialysis. After performing at the National Kidney Foundation‘s Philadelphia Kidney Walk last year, Philly Freezer helped to raise money that supports programs and services for kidney patients. Using social media to update the people on his recovery, Free is one of more than 121,000 people who are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant.

As someone who is also waiting for a kidney transplant, it has been hard to relay this information to my co-workers. In the past, I have had co-workers and friends who have filed me under “liability” after telling them that I was a dialysis patient. I have even lost opportunities because I have a kidney disease. I have even been distanced by friends who don’t know how to approach me knowing the severity of my health. Black Americans as a whole are three times more likely to experience kidney failure, which, once happens almost immediately requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. This conversation with Freeway was liberating for myself, as I could relate to what he is going through and I believe that it helped him as well.

In this Okayplayer exclusive, yours truly raps with Freeway who shares an extensive update about his health, what it is like to be on hemodialysis and provides an insider’s look at his upcoming album, Free Will.

This is a must-read for anyone who cares about health and kidney awareness in America.

Premiere: Feel The Deep Burn Of Pegasus Warning’s “Come Close”

Premiere: Feel The Deep Burn Of Pegasus Warning's "Come Close"

Pegasus WarningAKA Guillermo E. Brown, has been something of a staple in NYC’s burgeoning underbelly of R&B experimentalists over the last few years. In fact, it was Brown that was the subject of this writer’s very first First Look feature all the way back in 2013. Since then he’s sharpened his chops as a mainstay in James Corden’s Late Late Show house band alongside the continuously indefinable Reggie Wattsand if all goes according to plan, this summer will see the release of a new album from Pegasus Warning via his very own Melanin Harmonique Records imprint.

Today, we have the pleasure of bringing you a taste of just what’s in store for you this summer with the premiere of his sensual and synth-crushed single “Come Close.” The track bubbles with romantic notes for your romantic follies, as Brown’s rich baritone guides us to a lust supreme; a perfect score to those night-time-is-the-right-time moments. Feel the deep burn of Pegasus Warning’s latest down below, just be sure not to sleep on your boy. If “Come Close” is any indication of what’s to come, the warmer months of this year will prove to be a watershed moment in his career, and a righteous reintroduction for the rest of us. As the weeks go on, countless tribute and salutes to the everlasting glow of Prince will imminently surface, both as a reminder of all that he’s given us in his four decade run as the most electrifying man in the biz and a continuation of that unflinching legacy, still inspiring us all. What makes someone Black

I'm curious to hear from everyone what they think about racial identities. Me being Dominican and light skin, but having big lips and nappy hair reminds that I have African in me, and I am proud of it. The black experience being diverse as it is do you think anyone who has a connection to  it should be allowed to call themselves black?

The Roots Bring ‘Game Of Thrones’ Fans Up To Speed With A Recap Rap On ‘The Tonight Show’

The Roots Bring 'Game Of Thrones' Fans Up To Speed With A Recap Rap On 'The Tonight Show'

Last Sunday, HBO’s Game Of Thrones returned with its sixth season, treating an anxious fanbase to all of the dragons, gore and melodrama they can bear. But for those that missed the opening tick of GOT‘s new season or just want to pick up where the show’s currently at, the mighty Roots crew has got you covered. Last night on the The Tonight Show, The Roots took up the task of cooking up some recap raps of the last season, delivered by none other than Black Thought, to which the Roots offered a very funky JBs-inflected accompaniment to put a little bounce in your step as you catch up on your favorite fantastical not-just-TV show.

As someone who simply can’t take GOT seriously and generally averts his eyes and ears anytime it comes up in discussion, even I was able to get a kick out of this thing. You can watch The Roots bust a recap rap of the last season of Game Of Thrones down below. If you’re not looking to rely on the legendaries for your GOT spoilstune into HBO on Sundays at 9PM.

Anna Wise Releases Debut Solo Project ‘The Feminine: Act 1’

Anna Wise Releases Debut Solo Project 'The Feminine: Act 1'

If the months ahead of the official unveiling of her debut solo project have proved anything, it’s that Anna Wise is not a name we’ll soon forget. First, we caught a lesson in new-r&b hypnotics from “Precious Possession,” followed by “BitchSlut”; the feminist anthem 2016 deserves. Today, however, Wise adds to an already impressive resume with full reveal of her solo debut, The Feminine: Act 1, standing seven tracks strong in thick, synth-driven murk, stung together by Wise’s malleable melodics and left-leaning, post-Dilla type productions. All making for a delectable introduction to Wise ways, just in case you’ve been sleeping on any of her contributions to the last few Kendrick Lamar projects (we got you covered there, too.)

Danger Mouse Shares Rejected Off-Kilter Remix Of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”

Danger Mouse Shares Rejected Off-Kilter Remix Of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy"

It’s not easy to forget just how pervasive Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo‘s run as Gnarls Barkley was back in 2006, when they released their collaborative debut, St. Elsewhere, led by the chart-smashing single “Crazy.” By now, that hook and the slightly-orchestral arrangement that holds it should be thoroughly cemented knee-deep in your dome. And as the prospect of a Gnarls Barkley reunion slips further and further out of reach, Danger Mouse just released a strangely off-kilter remix of their breakout cut, which was apparently rejected by their label for inclusion on the debut album.

Now a decade into its shelf life, “Crazy” marks an introduction to Danger Mouse for many, following on the heels of his now legendary Grey Album, where he mashed Jay Z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album, starting a whole new thread in modern-day music (mash-up albums,) whether he meant to or not. You can stroll down your memory banks with this oddly infectious remix of “Crazy” down below, just be sure to keep your eyes on Danger Mouse in the weeks to come, as he continues to share morsels of his early sessions.

Prince Remembered By Exile w/ Tributary Instrumental EP

Exile Salutes Prince w/ Instrumental EP

Doves are crying far and wide, as we continue to mourn the loss of an icon. Today, Exile has turned in his own tribute to Prince with the three-track instrumental EP, Tears For A Prince. Flipping classics like “Erotic City,” “If I Was Your Girlfriend” and “Pop Life” into dizzying trap-touched constructions, perfect for the novice purple ear or one looking for a fresh spin on some time-tested joints. Along with the instrumentals, Exile has also put forth his own remembrance, which can be read in full down below along with the stream of Tears For A Prince. Read through for a touching note on the eternal glow of Prince and be sure to stay tuned as the tributes keep coming in.

“I woke up April 21st to the news of Prince’s passing. Before I could fully digest the news I receive numerous text from friends about his passing and how I should honor his passing with making music with Prince samples, in honor. I thought to myself I’m not going to do that, I’m not going to ride Prince’s legacy to gain fame. As time passed, drinks were sipped and again I’m asked the question “how are you going to respond, musically to his passing?” I went home faded, turned on the stereo and started banging Prince. As I’m listening I’m realizing all the emotion of mine that is stored in his music. I’m realizing how much of his music my mom would play loudly in the house. My mothers face happy as she would dance in the house. I mean she would be busting! Dancing like she’s in the club! She was good too! I began to cry and think about my own life, my mothers passing and princes passing as a symbol of this wonderful journey. A sign of the times of my own life to witness the death of my mother to know the the death of a prince that represents almost a farewell to a childhood that made the manhood of who I am now. The creativity I fight viciously for, and the inspiration I find along the way that keeps on track with the God energy means everything to me. All the summers that passed with this amazing inspiration, creativity and emotion that is Prince to me. I realized I have no choice but to honor his creative life by honoring my own by taking my good friends advice with these 3 simple beats and this hip hop I’ve been working on my whole life. This is what makes me happy. Inspiration turned to creation. With heart and with love.”

D’Angelo Salutes His Hero Prince w/ Intimate Rendition Of “Venus De Milo”

Hear D'Angelo's Intimate Rendition Of "Venus Di Milo" In Tribute To Prince

If we can entrust Prince‘s legacy of excellence to anyone in the modern-day music, it’s D’Angelo. As the son of a Pentecostal preacher who was indoctrinated in secular music by The Purple One, D has been more than forthright in his reverence for Prince and all the funk he left us with. And as the tributes and remembrances continue to pour in by way of performance and spoken word, today, we turn our lens towards the great redeemer of soul music and his own touching salute to the eternal glow of a real-life superhero, whose influence we will only now be able to scale as we look back on his prolific career.

In solidarity with an entire community of grieving musicians and music-types, D’Angelo performed an intimate, Wurlitzer-only rendition of Prince’s “Venus De Milo” (off 1986’s Under The Cherry Moon,) captured by Mervin Sealy during an impromptu studio session, oozing of gloom and mourning. It’s a short one, no doubt, but an everlasting reminder of all Prince has gifted unto this earthly plane and how he will continue to inspire forevermore. Hear D’Angelo’s take on “Venus Di Milo” below. Grab a copy of the criminally overlooked Under The Cherry Moon via Amazon today.

Questlove Remembers Prince & Says “He Was More Hip-Hop Than Anyone”

Questlove Prince

For decades, Questlove has unabashedly worn his fandom of Prince on his metaphorical purple sleeve. The Roots Crew drummer and music savant has referenced His Royal Badness countless times in interviews and, it was that shared mutual love that helped to forge a bond between Quest and D’Angelo. On the night of Prince’s death last week (April 21), though he was undoubtedly hurting like all other Prince fans, it was Quest who provided salve for a very fortunate few, with an hours-long Prince set of hits, deep cuts, rarities and favorites, at the Brooklyn Bowl. Now, the man born Ahmir Thompson turns to his pen for further catharsis.

Questlove & D’Angelo Discuss Their Mutual Love of Prince (Video)

Today (April 25), Quest released an essay about Prince, via Rolling Stone, that details his relationship with Prince’s music, and, to a lesser degree, the man, himself. One of the most poignant issues he addresses is Prince’s connection to Hip-Hop, saying that it ” has been the subject of much scrutiny, and more than a little mockery,” before boldly proclaiming that “at heart, he was more Hip-Hop than anyone.”

Questlove Prince

Quest explains his statement in great detail, using both specifics and metaphors. He starts with the album 1999, his introduction to Prince, saying “Think of 1999 again — or rather 1982. It was such a banner year for the use of drum machines, from Arthur Baker to Afrika Bambaataa. Prince’s programming work on 1999 was beyond anything I had ever heard, just as innovative as the best Hip-Hop producers in the years to come: the Bomb Squad, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla.”

Prince & Big Daddy Kane’s 1989 “Batdance Remix” Is Finally Released (Audio)

Later, Quest talks about Prince’s attitude and the commonalities it shared with the genre with which Ahmir is most closely associated, asserting “Prince was an outlaw. When he was giving interviews on the regular to Cynthia Horner in Right On! magazine, he was telling tall tales left and right. That was Hip-Hop.” He also lists several behaviors exhibited by Prince that exuded the essence of the culture. “He built a crew, a posse, around his look and his sense of style. That was Hip-Hop. He had beef (with Rick James). He had his own vanity label (Paisley Park). He had parents up in arms over the content of his songs to the point where they had to invent the Parental Advisory warning. Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop,” he writes.

In addition to painting his graffiti bridge between Prince and Hip-Hop, Quest shares some poignant and personal memories about how Prince shaped him as a man, citing Prince as the inspiration for his work ethic, as well as some anecdotes about his relationship with Prince. It is written from the perspective of both a fan and a Prince scholar. His full essay can be found at Rolling Stone.

Listen As Donnie Trumpet Pays Tribute To Prince On ‘In Your Light’

u6atygrqkiswn9vi4nqt

It still doesn’t feel like Prince Rogers Nelson is gone, but sadly, his physical is no longer with us. As we continue to cope and process this life-altering change, Donnie Trumpet of The Social Experiment pays tribute to the Purple One with a new song titled, “In Your Light.”

The talented horn player hasn’t released any of his own music since 2015’s Surf, but on “In Your Light,” vocals from Sima Cunningham fuel the Prince-inspired music that is helping the musician through what is arguably a hard time. Confessing in his Soundcloud description, Donnie Trumpet said that he was given a mix CD that contained a rare Prince song called “Donna,” which appeared on the unofficial rarities compilation album, The Work — Volume 1.

“One of my best friends and musical mentors, Maceo from the band The Omys gave me a mix cd when i was going through a tough time with a song called Donna by Prince. I listened to the song over and over in the car. I never imported the cd, could only hear it in the car, so when i tried listening to it on tour i couldn’t find it anywhere. As you know Prince’s music is pretty rare on the internet but this song was especially elusive because it was a part of a compilation album of his “unfinished” music. This was a really powerful inspiration for me after having worked so hard on Surf and still having so much material left over that didn’t quite fit but still described my vision and passion of the era of making music when putting Surf together. Songs are like poems, they’re never done.”

In paying tribute to “one of the greatest humans to ever grace [the] land,” Prince must be smiling after seeing how he has inspired so much creativity around the world.

Musical firebrands Miles Davis and Prince link on the previously unheard “Can I Play With U” (Extended). The track written by Prince and recorded for Davis’ 1986 Tutu LP was later scrapped. The result of a chance meeting at the airport in Los Angeles, the song’s genesis and ultimate absence from the project is detailed by Prince’s former tour manager Alan Leeds in an excerpt from author George Cole‘s book The Last Miles: The Music of Miles Davis (1980-1991)

TLM: Can you explain how “Can I Play With U?” happened?

AL: I’m basing this on my files and Eric’s journals and his recollections. Shortly after the meeting at the airport, they swapped numbers and I’m sure they talked about Prince submitting some material for the first Warner Bros album. As I said, there might even have been conversations before they met Tommy LiPuma [then head of Warner Bros jazz] and the Warner Bros people. So it was already in our mind that ‘Miles was on Warner and you guys are going to end up doing something together.’ Now, they’ve met and swapped numbers, it was more imminent. And once Prince has got a passion for something, he jumps right on it.

Within a couple of weeks, Prince was in the studio and he recorded the initial track was on the 26th and 27th of December 1985. Eric was in Florida on holiday with our parents and he got a call from Prince saying ‘hey you gotta come round here.’ Prince did the basic track on the 26th and Eric overdubbed his horn on the 27th. Eric recalls Prince intending to take the tape to Miles in Malibu and Prince said to Eric; “I’m going to take this tape to Miles in Malibu. Do you want to go?’ And Eric was well up for it! I don’t know why, but that meeting never happened but they sent the tape by messenger. In January [1986] Prince sent the multi-track tape to Miles for him to do whatever overdubs he wanted to do. This didn’t happen until February and March. Prince was never present at any of those overdub sessions – he had absolutely nothing to do with them. He was enamored with Miles but I don’t know how ambitious Prince was about working with Miles.

TLM: Prince pulled the track from the album.

AL: I remember Prince’s reaction when he got the tape back – he wasn’t enthralled with it. Not so much because of what Miles had done with it. But he just lived with the song long enough and realised that there wasn’t really anything brilliant about it. It was something that had been hastily and impulsively done. I feel certain that Prince felt that if there was going to be a collaboration that was officially released, it should be something more significant than what that track was. That wasn’t a reflection of Miles’s playing, but more about the composition and the significance of the quality of the track in itself. He seemed to lose interest in that track and the fact that album ended up going in a different direction [Marcus Miller took charge of the album that became Tutu]. I think if Tommy LiPuma or Miles had gone back to Prince and said ‘look this track isn’t great. Let’s do more and let’s make an album together,’ I think Prince would have probably submitted twenty tracks. I don’t think it would have changed his MO or his willingness to spend a lot of time in the studio together, but I think he would have been interested in submitting tons of tracks in the hope of making an album. But that didn’t happen. Whether he was hurt by that, I don’t know, but I know he just seemed to lose interest.

Though Prince felt the track missed the mark, the bold recording suggests that the pair were truly cut from the same funky cloth. Check the track below to listen to “Can I Play With U” (Extended).

Gotye – “Sometimes It Snows In April” [Prince Tribute]

Enigmatic Aussie Singer & Multi-Instrumentalist Gotye Celebrates Prince With An Emotionally Dense Cover Of "Sometimes It Snows In April."

Enigmatic Aussie singer and multi-instrumentalist Gotye celebrates Prince with an emotionally dense cover of “Sometimes It Snows In April.” Gotye’s 2013 Grammy for Record Of The Year was presented by Prince, who expressed his appreciation for the song during the exchange. This misty a capella take on the 1986 closing track from his Parade LP is a fitting note of thanks that brings Gotye full circle, capturing both a visceral pain and a deep well of respect for Prince.

Prince & Big Daddy Kane’s “Batdance” (Remix) Sees The Light Of Day

Prince & Producer John Luongo's 1989 "Batdance" (Remix) Feauturing Big Daddy Kane Finally Sees The Light Of Day.

Once deemed too much of a risk by the label and subsequently shelved, Prince and producer John Luongo‘s “Batdance” (Remix) finally sees the light of day. The track produced and recorded in 1989 boasts two verses from Big Daddy Kane, which he reportedly came up with on the spot in the studio. The final mix from Luongo combines Kane’s bars with new vocals from Prince and a chop of the 1960s Batman theme. The end result is a funked up boom-bap rendition of the anthem that captures the true essence and brilliance of both artists. Unfortunately, Warner decided the remix was “weird” and tabled the track. Luongo talks the particulars in conversation with the L.A. Times:

So what happened to the song?

The whole thing, recording, mix and editing, took a day and a half. But I had a deadline! I remember FedEx was there waiting as I did my best to finish up, so we could make the next plane to rush it over to L.A. and Minnesota to let Warner Bros. and Prince hear what I had done. … And then Warner Bros. said they didn’t like it; it was too different. And that was it. They didn’t release it.

Thanks to the magic of the internets, however, we are all in for a treat. Check the track below to listen to the “Batdance” (Remix). Get more via GoWhereHipHop.com and latimes.com

Always Worth The Pain: Martha High Flew w/ Legends, Now Ready For Her Close-Up [Interview + Premiere]

Always Worth The Pain: Martha High Flew w/ Legends, Now Ready For Her Close-Up [Interview + Premiere]

Speaking with Martha is the conversational equivalent of fly-on-the-walling your way through 60 years of black excellence. An integral component to the sounds that shaped a generation, a millennium, really, Martha High is one of the only pillars left standing of a foundational regime, singing from the wings, and then from the chest, of James Brown‘s blockbuster revues. She sharpened her chops and stage presence at the behest of The Godfather, who was never shy in coaching his supporting talent, no matter the cost to their wallet or his reputation, and can now proudly say that she wields what has to be the most hilariously-accurate JB impression that ever was. Itself worth all of the humble brag rights.

But all those years under the wing of a Titan hasn’t hardened her heart or jaded the seasoned vocalist in the least bit, in fact, she intends to publish a book this year on her time touring with The JBs and Bo Diddly before that. Her voice is warm, her disposition is something of a reserved elation, and if our talk was any indication, the winds of time have merely rolled off her back. Martha High may not have been the focal point of her past life as a an unspoken cornerstone to the James Brown sound, but in this new one, as she readies the release of her first solo album of original compositions, she’ll be front and center with no caped-crusader to steal the show, armed with 30 years of on-the-road experience supporting some of the best to ever do it.

Today, we have the pleasure of bringing you the first taste of Singing For The Good Times with the premiere of “Always Worth The Pain”. Take heed to this smokey blues-infused ballad down below and scroll through to become acquainted with one of the preeminent voices of the 20th and 21st centuries, who shared just a sliver of her screenplay-worthy tale with us over the phone. Her new album Singing For The Good Times is out now and can be purchased via Bandcamp today.

OKP Premiere: Connor Evans Offers Unique From The Vibe Album

Promo Pic for Premire

It’s been a few years since the music game have heard from California native, Connor Evans. After hitting greenies in the face with some good vibes in the form of “Ganja,” which featured Villz on the hook, OKP is happy to premiere his second single for your audio enjoyment. Like other rappers who aim to find themselves within the biz, Connor Evans took a few paces back to rediscover himself and focus on getting his personal life in order before reappearing with new work.

Now, with that introspection in the rearview, Connor Evans latest and greatest effort is surpassing expectations. Armed with a renewed focus and energy, this tune is possibly a big one in the making. Thankfully, this frequency is stemming from Connor Evans’ upcoming album, The Vibe. When asked about the inspiration behind “Unique,” which should have a release date announced shortly, Connor told us:

“This was one of the first records I wrote after moving to the Virgin Islands. I wrote the first half of this song while on a plane to London while traveling alone. After staying there for a few nights, I then spent a week in Budapest. I wrote the second half of the song after my first few days in Nashville when I returned to the United States. I had a lot of experiences that rocked me and took me out of a routine I was falling into. For a while there I was finding it hard to really feel and connect with my own emotions.”

“Unique” is a record about getting in touch with one’s self and being reminded about who you are. “We cut [the song] spur of the moment in our friend Brad’s auto shop, Unique Automotive, in Nashville.” Amidst a ton of old school whips, graffiti and energy, Connor riffed the chorus, which was kept because it went well with song, as he built it out to be a moment of clarity for those who live through unique experiences.

Listen to “Unique” below + keep an eye and ear out for the announcement for Connor Evans’ album release date:

Premiere: Speech Debelle Returns with New Single Terms & Conditions

Speech Debelle

After making her empowered return back to the music scene last month, Speech Debelle continues with the smooth sounds today. We proudly premiere the latest single from the South London lyricist, “Terms & Conditions.” Always one to bring meaning to her music, Debelle’s latest track addresses the cycles in a toxic relationship. Says Debelle of the song:

We click ‘Yes’ when it says ‘Have you read the terms and conditions?’ but we don’t even skim read… I was getting into a relationship with somebody without having the energy of the last person removed and allowing myself enough time to heal from the process – and I hadn’t even read my own terms and conditions, let alone considered the other person’s.

A very relatable situation right there. “Terms & Conditions” is produced by Wayne Lotek (co-produced by Nick Trepka) with backing vocals from Shingai Shoniwa (of the Noisettes) and Miss Baby Sol. Speech Debelle’s third album, Tantil Before I Breathe, will be out in September along with a collection of recipes and stories in Tantil Before I Breathe: The Cookbook.

Erykah Badu Celebrates 4/20 w/ This Remix of Wintertimes Thru It All

Badu
photo: Jody Rogac

Florida rapper Wintertime has been steadily ascending the last few months. After dropping an EP with Lil Yachty, and then more recently having his anthemic cut “Thru it All” remixed by iLoveMakonnen the future was looking bright for the 19 year old emcee. Today though, the aforementioned track gets a remix I damn sure did not see coming, that should have Wintertime’s name on everyone’s mind soon enough. None other than Erykah Badu just dropped her own version in honor of 4/20, “I Been Goin Thru It All.” Badu tries her hand at that “bubblegum trap” sound and laces it from start to finish, or as she puts it “this that real ninja shit” – we need more of this. 4/20 isn’t the only reason for Badu to celebrate today, as mentioned in the song, she is on the cover of the APR/MAY issue of Fader (pre-order that).

OKP Premiere: Silentjay x Jace XL Share Vibrate Sacrifice With The Masses

Melbourne’s own Silentjay x Jace XL have impressed audiences with their unique brand of music that places itself in a category all its own. After perking our ears up with the “Just Wakin’ Up” release last year, we’ve been patiently awaiting the retro-rooted R&B duo’s Sacrifice EP. With the full clip being released shortly through Rhythm Section, OKP is ecstatic to present two new songs from the project in the form of “Sacrifice” + “Vibrate”.

Together, their unique strain (happy 4/20, y’all!) of future beats and soulful sounds will lift you to another stratosphere upon pressing play. Conceptually, Silentjay x Jace XL’s debut mini-album isn’t just for the lovers and the audiophiles, as they’ve crafted a project that doesn’t take all day to listen to and packs a sonic boom punch like Guile. In addition to the two tracks we’re premiering, you should know that they have a really cool rework of Jeff Buckley‘s “Everybody Here Wants You”.

Created during a time where both artists were experiencing the woes and troubles of being in an relationship, “Sacrifice,” according to them, “goes hand-in-hand with R&B.” “It was an attempt at recreating the nostalgic feelings that ’90s R&B music gave us,” Silentjay x Jace XL told us exclusively via e-mail. “The dreamy overtone was something we noticed only after we had finished it, but our guess is that comes across cause of our hopes for better days.” With most of the EP made during Melbourne’s winter, “Sacrifice,” lyrically, doesn’t mean surrendering — instead it “is a personal reminder to yourself and your loved one of the balance between selfishness and selflessness.”

For “Vibrate,” the melodies and subject drew Silentjay x Jace XL into a zone that forced them to become infatuated with the song. “At the time we were working on this, there was a bit of a ‘down’ period and it comes through in the lyrics,” the tandem told us through e-mail exchange. “As we progressed through the song, I managed to come to if not peace with the situation, then some kind of truce with it. The hook is fairly literal in its meaning, wanting to connect soul-to-soul.”

Without any further ado, we present “Sacrifice” + “Vibrate” for your earholes’ pleasure. If you’re a fan of that ’90s R&B feel who misses that sincere emotion, then Silentjay x Jace XL are just what you need. This dynamic duo is just what the game needs right now, and we’re encouraging you to stay tuned in to them as they keep making a splash in the game.

Heres LargeUps Ganja Special 420 Mix To Bless The Air

Here's LargeUp's Island-Approved 420 Mix To Bless The Air

LargeUp, purveyor of all island-side riddims this side of the Carribean, has the perfect score for your stoner follies this 420. Their Ganja Special mix, helmed by Bay Area-based selector, King I-Vier, features a fantastic blend of what LargeUp dubs “100% ganja dubplates.” For those in-tune with the island waves, the mix will prove to be a more than apt sonic accompaniment to the day’s celebration, bringing you notes from RSNY, Chronixx, Marlon Asher, Mr. Vegas and plenty more heaters from heavyweights and sleepers alike. It does dawn on me that listening to reggae and dancehall (or as Rolling Stone once put it, “Tropical House”) does come off as a tad cliche, but this one should certainly offer a bit of nuance to those trying to buck the cheese and corn and keep with the rice and peas.

And so, as we slip into high-noon of the holidaze, it’s only right that you bless the air with these choice selections. Stream King I-Vier’s Ganja Special mix and peep the full track list down below. Hold tight for all of the musical musings that are sure to come on this gloriously green day.

Felix Snow & SZA Take It To The Dance Floor w/ Lies

Felix Snow

You’ll remember our first samplings of the work of SZA came with her paired with then go-to producer Felix Snow. The two re-connect today on Felix’s new track, “Lies.” Felix Snow and SZA are definitely taking us to the dance floor with this electro-pop new joint. Says Felix of the collaboration:

This song is just something where the style was something I wanted to hear her sing on. Her stuff is usually more chill and laid back and I wanted her to go in on something uptempo, because her voice sounds dope on it.

The song will appear on EFFESS Records (co-founded by Felix Snow) new compilation project, Nukes In The Kitchen, which is set to drop in May.

I’m very interested in hearing this new JMSN album, It Is, in full. While the first two singles very much had a soulful sound to them, The Michigan singer/songwriter/producer takes it to the islands with his latest single – not mad at this at all. Moments ago, JMSN released his self-produced, reggae-tinged new single “Hypnotized” (Arima Ederra on backup vocals). Dude is 3 for 3 as far as I’m concerned. JMSN’s new album is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated spring releases. It Is will be out May 6th (pre-order).

MNDSGN Brings The Breeze To Benny Sings’ “The Beach House”

MNDSGN Brings The Breeze To Benny Sings' "The Beach House"

MNDSGN, a prolific, relatively new contributor in the Stones Throw guard of beatsman, has made quite the name for himself over the last few years with hallmark planet-jumping refixes, as well as his own 2014 label debut, Yawn Zen. Today, as a precursor to Stones Throw’s late-April Tokyo takeover, MNDSGN has graced us with yet another tinkered and toiled treatment, this time, with Benny Sings‘ already boogie-drenched STUDIO album cut, “The Beach House.”

Wielding a little of that Pasadena shine on the synth and sample work, the Stones Throw producer gifts us with yet another summer-calling remix to jumpstart the day, breezy and buoyant in all of the right ways. As mentioned, MNDSGN will join the ranks of some of Stones Throw’s finest as they extend the 20th anniversary celebrations to the land of the rising sun, spinning at Vision with Peanut Butter Wolf, Egyptian Lover, Knxwledge, not to mention Earl Sweatshirt, who just recently stepped out with his own sound selecting styles. So if you happen to find yourself on that side of the Pacific, please do partake. According to the label, MNDSGSN is also working on a new record, but this should certainly hold you over as we slip into these warmer days.

Hear Waajeed Blend The Sultry Classics Of Aaliyah & Barry White On This “Rock The Boat” Remix

Waajeed Blends Sultry Classics By Aaliyah & Barry White

Waajeed, one of the principal architects and long-time collaborators of Slum Villagehas been curiously quiet over the last few years, touring the globe as a world-class DJ and just generally doing dope shit wherever it may be. The first many of us had heard from The Motor City renaissance man in ages was his contribution to the recently released J Dilla vocal album, The Diary, where Jeedo’s touch could be found on the Nottz and Boogie-assisted “Fight Club.”

Today, he resurfaces with a choice remix of Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat,” blending Baby Girl’s sultry 2002 classic with the sampledelic bones of Barry White‘s “Play Your Game, Baby” (formerly of Black Moon and Big Daddy Kane fame.) And though it may not seem like the most fitting mosh, the track — commencing and capping with some XXX-rated notes — should feel right at home at your next BBQ or even those twilight moments with the one you love. Stream Waajeed’s steamy recalibration of Aaliyah’s “Rock The Boat” down below and if you’re looking for another rework of Aaliyah’s work, jump back to heard OVO’s dvsn take up the task with their own purple-crushed treatment of “One In A Million.” These warmer days simply demand it.

STREAM “The Ashby Project” From Kay & King Mason x The Kashmere Don

FWMJ's Rappers I Know Presents 'The Ashby Project' From Kay & King Mason starring The Kashmere Don.

FWMJ‘s Rappers I Know keeps the heat coming with The Ashby Project from Kay and King Mason, starring The Kashmere Don. Combining the pioneering sound of harpist Dorothy Ashby with H-Town’s trill vernacular and the signature thump of J Dilla, the 12-track album arrived on Monday sporting an impressive list of features including Chip Fu, Sy Smith, The K-Otix, Toby Hill, Marium Echo and Nicole Hurst. The Ashby Project is a multi-faceted gem punctuated by top notch wordplay and cinematic production that matches the seamless arranging and improvisational acumen of the Robert Glasper Experiment, D’Angelo & The Vanguard and other leaders at the helm of all things funky and forward in black music. Easily another homerun for the Rappers I Know catalog, the compilation from Kay, King Mason and The Kashmere Don is an emphatic statement that raises the bar and challenges rap to rise to the occasion. Best of all? The entire thing is available for free. Check out the tracks below to stream the full release. Download The Ashby Project via Bandcamp. Get more via rappersiknow.com. Don’t sleep.

ELUCID x Psychic Twin – “NY Blanks” (prod. Willie Green)

ELUCID Teases His Forthcoming Debut Full-Length 'Save Yourself' LP With The Lead Single "NY Blanks" Featuring Psychic Twin.

ELUCID preps listeners for his forthcoming full-length Save Yourself LP with the lead single “NY Blanks” featuring Psychic Twin. The track produced by Willie Green arrives ahead of the project, which is due to drop on April 15th. The latest since the otherworldly single “OSAGE,” this track – like the album – is yet another dank, futuristic journey into ELUCID’s psyche that boasts an industrial feel and finds him spitting with an urgency that suggests the world might be coming to an end. Though it is also plausible that he could be searching for a light at the end of the tunnel…or maybe just himself.

“Save yourself is my most immediate and personal record to date. It’s difficult to articulate but handling the bulk of production may have had something to do with that. I didn’t really know what I was making. When the spirit moved, the raps poured out. I was talking about myself. My community. About where I came from and future possibilities,” ELUCID says. “At its core, Save Yourself is about rebirth—of both self and community. An examination. An assessment. A shedding. I was working through personal issues that spilled over into the music. Events regarding police brutality and shootings of unarmed black folk dominated news headlines in a way that I’ve never seen in my lifetime. Liberation was on my mind. I reaffirmed myself in the idea that I couldn’t truly be free until we were all free.”

Check the track below to listen to “NY Blanks.” Pre-order the Save Yourself LP via Bandcamp. Follow ELUCID via Twitter at @elucidwho for more.

Returning

Sup, My name is Anthony and I'm a returning member after I deleted my profile one month after the site first launch. Back then Afropunk was full of people accusing each other of not punk enough or they're skin was too light and all that trash. It was far too toxic. I hope the community matured a bit and looking to push the movement forward other then argue over petty reasons.
