Class Is In-Session: The Paul Institute’s First Release Is A Purple Treat From A.K. Paul

Just a few days ago, Jai & A.K. Paul sent up a flair/sign of life with the establishment of the Paul Institute; a characteristically mysterious landing site that encouraged users to sign up for direct updates on the duo’s anxiously-anticipated resurgence. And while many of us (yes, even this diehard Paul stan) assumed that The Institute was just another ploy to distract us from the fact that there hasn’t been anything to see or hear on the Paul front since Miguel‘s “FLESH” (and the leak of Jai’s demos well before that,) it appears we may actually be on the cusp of a real-life return to the world.

Today, Zane Lowe premiered (and then burned the tracks off of) “Landcruisin'”; the first release from A.K. Paul through The Paul Institute. And what a thorough lesson it is. Borrowing, as much of the Paul palette does, from Prince’s “Kiss”/Sign Of The Times-era genius, A.K. sculpts a slick and savory specimen that bleeds of purple excellence. Terrace Martin Shares Potent, Tribe-Inspired New Single

On April 1st, Terrace Martin will release his third studio album, Velvet Portraits, wrangling the likes of Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington, Lalah Hathaway and Thundercat for an album that promises to continue the To Pimp A Butterfly legacy with a grip of its foremost contributors.

Last week, we heard Martin and Washington’s cerebral campaign-starter, “Think Of You.” Today, however, Martin shares another taste of what’s to come with the heady, A Tribe Called Quest-inspired single “Tribe Called West.” Born out of an extended stay in NYC, “Tribe Called West” is as much of a salute to Phife, Tip and Ali Shaheed as it is a continuation of the free-jazz toting legacy of one of hip-hop’s most influential collectives. And it couldn’t be a more a timely one, as we continue to pay tribute and remember The Five Foot Assassin in the wake of such an incredible loss to the culture.

The campaign began with the unveiling of 10.4 Rog’s slick and strut-worthy contribution, “Sidewalking” (which we had the pleasure of bringing you all those weeks ago,) but today we’re happy to host the full reveal, featuring contributions from young and unsung musical maestros the world over, ahead of the album’s official March 25th release.

For his curatorial debut, POMO (who can be found at the helm of Anderson .Paak‘s “Am I Wrong” off his breakout Malibu LP) taps into the creative wellspring of producers like Exmag, SYRE, GEOTHEORY, Daniel Crawford and plenty more, introducing us to a whole new crop of producers with tracks draw as much from Flying Lotus’ madcap musical experiments as Kaytranada’s house-y, hip-hop-leaning constructions.  But don’t take it from us. Premiere: Big Cats’ New Project Eases Existential Angst With Atmospheric Notes

Over the last year, Minnesotan dynamo, Big Cats, has treated us to heaps of audible and visual treats, ranging from a full tape of Frank Ocean rarities to his own cerebral compositions. Today, however, we have the pleasure of bringing you the premiere of his latest haul, What If It Doesn’t Get Better?; an 8-track EP of high-grade atmospherics to ease your existentialist angst.

The album hosts a short list of features, including contributions from frequent collaborators, Lydia Liza, Eric Mayson, Gen Devine, Nelson Devereaux, and Claire de Lune. In an email to OKP, Cats explained: 

A few of the songs are about astral projection, being in multiple places at once, time travel, remote viewing, UFOs, conspiracy theories, space travel. One of the songs is about the Moon possibly being a giant spaceship.

All of which is to say, that if you’re looking to cure your earthly anxieties (or even feel the full brunt of their weight) What If It Doesn’t Get Better? is a damn-good place to start. SBTRKT Recruits D.R.A.M. & Mabel For “I Feel Your Pain”

After starting your morning off properly with The-Dream the other day, SBTRKT comes back with something even doper (IMO) with his latest drop. This time, SBTRKT turns the empathy up with the D.R.A.M. and Mabel assisted single, “I Feel Your Pain.” With all due respect to D.R.A.M. I think UK songstress Mabel kind of steals the show on this one. SBTRKT reveals that this track as well as “Good Morning” will appear on his as-yet-untitled forthcoming album. Expect more new music from coming soon (and more collaborations from D.R.A.M. and Mabel as well).
