Masques and Murder (James Patton)

Masques and Murder is a Renaissance revenge fantasy that stands the traditional dating sim visual novel on end. You play a young Italian woman; your family is murdered during the tutorial, and the Prince tells you you must marry one of his three sons. Each son has a taste for particular skills and accomplishments. Impress the sons, and you can get close enough to kill them off.

The bulk of gameplay consists of training your various skills, from hawking to firearms to classics. Periodically new social engagements appear on your calendar, and you have to prepare to meet their demands. If you do well at the skills required, the brothers admire you more and are therefore easier to kill. If not, their admiration drops. There are a couple of small complications that add challenge — you need to keep them from getting too suspicious, and your study abilities are improved if you first reread your Revenge Poem, filling yourself with righteous fury.

This makes it easier and fairer than, say, Long Live the Queen, but also way shorter and less interesting overall. There are few narrative incidents where you can have a unique conversation with anyone; it’s basically all stat-grinding, one stat at a time. There are descriptions for what happens when you train a stat, but these get pretty repetitive, which means that the moment-to-moment gameplay isn’t very juicy: select a stat to work on, reread the same training text as before (often, anyway), select a new stat, … Still, it doesn’t take long to at least get the idea of the game, and I was amused by what it did with the usual tropes of its genre.

Eventually you become close enough to someone to attempt using your skills to kill him — and it’s just as possible to kill someone with verses as with swordplay. Full marks for the description of how to kill a man using your skill at classics.

Tiffany Gouché “Red Rum Melody”

Damn, Tiffany Gouché definitely caught my attention with her MNDSGN produced single, “Fantasy,” but she’s straight up killin it with this new jawn. Gouché comes through with this sultry new slow jam, “Red Rum Melody.” The track serves as the first single off of the LA singer/songwriter/producer’s upcoming EP, Pillow Talk, which will be out on December 15th. Expect more from Gouché on here coming soon.

Kid Cudi Gifts Fans w/ New Single “Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven”

So looks like we’ve got some good news/bad news with Kid Cudi tonight. Sadly, it looks like after recently kicking off his Especial tour in Denver the other night, Cudi’s tour has now been shelved indefinitely. He announced it this evening on twitter citing a need to perfect the show’s production as well as personal reasons for the cancelation. Now onto the good news, he promises to eventually follow through on the tour (including re-doing the Denver date), and as a thank you to his fans for rocking with him, he released “Speedin’ Bullet 2 Heaven” on his soundcloud, the title track to his upcoming LP. You can listen to the Cudi & Plain Pat produced track, below. Look for Cudi’s 5th studio album, Speeding’ Bullet 2 Heaven to drop this Friday.

FloFilz & Ivan Ave Share The Dreamy Jazz-Tinged Cut “Shinethru”

On his personal SoundCloud page, Aachen-based producer FloFilz self identifies as “jazz sample based oldschool shit from Germany,” and by all accounts, the man is sticking to that gameplan. On his new single “Shinethru,” Flofilz taps Norwegian MC Ivan Ave to deliver an absolutely gorgeous single, built of a looping jazz guitar line, tight synth bass and dry drums. If you’re the type to dig for hours on sites like 8tracks, looking for dusty obscure jazz-hop, this is going to sound like something out of a dream.

Ivan Ave sounds as if he’s at the top of his game on this one, rapping with growing intensity about a certain love that’s taken him by sudden surprise. “Never uttered the word couple / Onto the daytrips into each others’ bubbles,” he rhymes, delivering a faded polaroid view of temporary, honest love. It’s just an absolutely gorgeous piece of work. The track will appear on FloFilz upcoming record Speakthru, which arrives December 4th on Jakarta Records. And at the end of a long day, it’s these soft and soothing tracks that we often find ourselves reaching for. NxWorries (Anderson Paak & Knxwledge) Drop Another Brilliant Joint w/ “Link Up”

For those that may not have seen the smoke rising over the Stones Throw HQ when NxWorries dropped the soupy goodness that was their debut “Suede,” the duo, BKA Anderson Paak & Knxwledge, delivered a powerful promise with it. That promise would be one we’re still reeling over; that one day, hopefully before the year lets out, we’d hear a full-length project from the new class of blessed coast brilliance.

Today, Paak took to Beats 1 Radio to pull the covers off the team’s latest release, “Link Up,” which builds off the liquid late-night Brazilian funk groove “Onda” by Cassiano with Paak adding a few vocal lines over Knwxledge’s drunken drum clinic.
