Quelle Chris x Bilal Salaam – “I’m The Bridge That You Must Burn” (Remix)

Quelle Chris & Bilal Salaam Connect On The "I'm The Bridge That You Must Burn" (Remix) From Chris' 'Lullabies For The Broken Brain' LP, Out February 26th via Mello Music Group.

Quelle Chris and Bilal Salaam connect on the “I’m The Bridge That You Must Burn” (Remix) – a haunting bonus track from Chris’ forthcoming Lullabies for the Broken Brain instrumental LP, out February 26th via Mello Music Group. The trippy chant of Salaam’s droning refrain is the perfect foil for the blooming melody and driving percussion at the heart of the remix. Touted as the proper accompaniment to introspection, vice and armageddon, Chris drops a description of the Lullabies… LP that is as intriguing as the single.

For some, lullabies come to mind when fondling the planets while being lost in space. Formed in different dreams, daydreams, and hallucinations, set low in the earth or hanging high at the Alamo, lullabies seem to stir up a sort of distress that we all need at times. This project is a amalgamation of beats put together to do something. Whether to reflect on a certain animal within, or to accompany heavy drugs, Lullabies puts forth farts to provoke blah blah.

Check the track below to listen to the “I’m The Bridge That You Must Burn” (Remix). Download the track via SoundCloud. Pre-order the Lullabies for the Broken Brain LP via iTunes.

Consequence Jumps On A Rare, Q-Tip-Produced Gem

Consequence Jumps On A Q-Tip Produced Gem

Q-Tip and Consequence seem to truly be on the mend. Just a few weeks back the brothers in rhyme, cousins in real-life, joined forces on Cons’ “No Matter What” off his return project, the aptly-titled, A Good Comeback Story. Now, with the album officially out and about in the world and getting the burn it deserves, Con appears to have dug up a finished version of a very special Q-Tip production to drop some dimes over.

Some of you may be familiar with an infamous, 4-minute clip of The Abstract hugging a turntable and dropping the needle on a crucial piece of wax while in the lab with Kanye and Common, dubbed, “Q-Tip Is A Beast.” Those of you who have yet to travel that far down the internet’s back alleys, I’ve included the clip below. In any case, it’s the completed version of that very flip that Con picks up and has his way with, providing a rare glimpse at a fleshed-out production that was only teased in said clip. Oh, and Con does it right, too.

You won’t hear it on the new project, but you can certainly get familiar with this delicious loosie down below. If you’ve yet to cop Consequences’ A Good Comeback Story, you can do so today via iTunes. Here’s hoping the the family affair is an eternal one.

Reality Check: Rihanna x Drake’s “Work” Is Not ‘Tropical House’–It’s Dancehall!

Rihanna Shares New 'ANTI' Single "Work" feat. Drake

Rihanna‘s long-awaited Drake collabo “Work” (the dancehall-inflected slow-winder that served as the trumpet-call announcing the arrival of her long-awaited new LP ANTI–listen here) is emblematic of a disturbing trend in pop music. Dancehall seems to have taken over the world (again)–but in the absence of any actual crossover artists (Exhibit A Justin Bieber‘s Diplo/Skrillex-produced dancehall ballad “Sorry”). “Work” made by two artists who have made no secret of their love for reggae, seemes set to cut against the trend. Yet, in describing it the mainstream music press seems to be bending over backwards in limbo-like contortions to avoid using the term, in one notable case even reaching for the not-really-a-thing genre term ‘Tropical House’ as preferable to noting the song’s (and Rihanna’s) undeniable Caribbean influence.

LargeUp editor Jesse Serwer stepped up yesterday with this dead-on analysis in his semi-regular Check It Deeply column, tracing the riddim’s paternity definitively to a specific late ’90s riddim:

Dancehall listeners have noted the similarities between producer Boi-1da’s beat and Richie Stephens’ Sail Away riddim, which spawned the Beenie Man and Mr. Vegas collaboration “Badman Nuh Flee” and Sean Paul’s “Fit and Legit” in 1998.

That “Work” bears an undeniable resemblance to a mid-level, late-’90s dancehall instrumental is not something one could have predicted, yet it is not surprising. We were already anticipating a dancehall influence on Rihanna’s upcoming album, Anti(which is reportedly about to drop this week, too). It’s no secret that the Bajan singer’s team has been soliciting input from dancehall producers and artists in Jamaica. Not that she can’t find the links between pop and dancehall herself. A soca-loving daughter of Barbados who knows how to do the Puppy Tail dance, Rihanna is better versed in Caribbean music and culture than any other pop star (including Nicki Minaj) and, likely, anyone on her production and management teams. (She probablyknows the words to this one, too.)

“Work” producer and long-time Drake collaborator Boi-1da is himself a product of Kingston. (Though he only lived there til age three, and has said he’s never been back). He’s been adding dancehall influences into his sound more recently, having last year produced Kendrick Lamar’s “The Blacker The Berry,” the To Pimp A Butterfly single which featured an unexpected cameo from dancehall star Assassin.

However, the similarities between “Work” and Sail Away (which itself was based on a melody from Alexander O’Neal’s “If You Were Hear Tonight”) —as well as the patois (“yuhzeeme”) and Caribbean intonation sprinkled throughout the song by both Rihanna and dancehall super-fan Drake (who slyly drops the term forward into his verse) — are likely lost on most who heard “Work” this morning, including music experts. Write-ups on the track, such as this one in Rolling Stone, have more often identified the song with terms like “tropical house-flavored.”

>>>Read More/Stream ‘Sail Away’ Riddim (via LargeUp)

To my earphones, “Work” might be even better described as a cross between Sail Away and Salaam Remi‘s 2000 Acid Hall riddim (listen below). But if anything the fact that the track’s maternal DNA is also from the West Indies just underscores the point. As LargeUp has knowledgeably documented (here and elsewhere) Bajan-born Robyn Fenty‘s oevre is shot through with Caribbean tropes, beginning with her breakout single “Pon De Replay”–so why can’t we talk about it? It seems yet another glaring example of black creativity and Afro-diasporic culture being subject to a program of deracination even as it is adopted and duplicated worldwide in a sort of cultural kleptonesia. Cynics will point out this is nothing new. And yet…is this really where we’re at in 2016? Can dancers in Ibiza and Vegas really only truly leggo to the sounds of Caribbean rhythms if they are presented as something else? What would mess up their vibe, exactly–an uncomfortable identification with the artform’s creators? Yes, the history of “western” music is littered with similar cases of “emulate and demonize” from Handel’s “Sarabande” to the tango, but we can expect that this process ends here. Let dancehall be the last bashment that dare not speak it’s name.

Premiere: Get Taken From “Then To Now” w/ Aria Lanelle’s Pulsing New Single

Aria Lanelle - "Then To Now"

This spring, Boston songbird Aria Lanelle will lay down yet another pillar to her future-funk&soul dynasty with the release of the sophomore EP, My Name Is. As a warm and welcome introduction to the fuzzed-out r&b frequencies Lanelle wields, she’s graced with the premiere of the project’s inaugural single, “Then To Now,” written, produced and arranged by the vocalist herself.Over an oscillating sub-bass groove, layers of visceral vox and criminally-infectious hook, Lanelle reflects on her growth through this deeply introspective rhythmic romp, mounting with each of the track’s several movements. And if this holds as any indication of what’s to come, My Name Is could very well be one of the year’s most compelling drops, establishing Lanelle as one of the the brightest young voices on the scene.

There’s no official date on the new project as of yet, but you can get taken from “Then To Now” with Aria Lanelle’s buzzing and buoyant new single below. Those looking to see her live and direct can catch her in Cambridge, MA on February 20th at The Lily Pad. Peruse her Soundcloud page to get familiar and hold tight for the next transmission.

Hannibal Buress Dissects His Favorite Music In Debut Episode Of New Spotify Program

Spotify Is Giving Hannibal Buress A Platform To Talk About His Favorite Music

Hannibal Buress has always expressed a deep appreciation of musical excellence. His show Why? proved this in spades, hosting the gamut of left-leaning eccentrics like Flying Lotus (as house DJ) Thundercat, Jean Grae and Open Mike Eagle, for brilliant live performances on the program. Hell, he’s even actually been featured on a few songs, ad-libbing over tracks for BJ The Chicago Kid and Open Mike in recent years.

A new partnership with Spotify as their current artist-in-residence finds the comedian waxing sentimental over some of this favorite cuts from throughout hip-hop history, including joints from Raekwon, Nas, Lupe Fiasco, OutKast, Busta Rhymes, K-Ci & Jo-Jo and plenty of others that should pique your interest. His musings are, of course, rib-tickling and offer a rare lens into the man’s musical palette. The first episode was released today and is available for you to stream down below. Be sure to stay woke, as Buress will have a new episode premiere every month. As far as live dates are concerned, you can catch him in Cambridge, MA on February 26th at MIT’s Kresge Auditorium. Check back in the months ahead for new drops from Hannibal Buress.

Freddie Gibbs Has His Way w/ Kanye West & Madlib’s “No More Parties In LA”

Freddie Gibbs Has His Way w/ Kanye West & Madlib's "No More Parties In LA"

Freddie Gibbs may be coming off of one of his best years to date and Madlib may be shopping beats to the likes of Kanye West, but what better time than now to stage a little MadGibbs reunion? Gangsta Gibbs, knowing full well of Kanye’s newly-emphasized penchant for Madlib frequencies, went ahead and had his way with the hypnotic Junie-sampling Kendrick Lamar collaboration, “No More Parties In LA,” blazing through the cut with his machine-gun delivery and transforming it into his own “Cocaine Parties In LA,” surely a nod to the classic Pinata LP with the Beat Konducta at the helm. So if you’ve been itching for more MadGibbs merriments, consider this your fix for now.

One time for the mighty Freddie Gibbs. Peep “Cocaine Parties In LA”  below and grab a copy of Shadow Of A Doubt on iTunes today. If you happen to find yourself in Australia in March, check out your boy live and direct at Manning Bar in Sydney on the 11th and at the Meredith Supernatural Amphitheater the following day. Hold tight for any and all things Gibbs related in the weeks and months ahead.

Travi$ Scott Jumps On A Remix Of Miguel’s “Waves”

Miguel Enlists Travi$ Scott For "Waves" Remix

Since the release of his Wildheart LP, Miguel‘s approach to support has leaned heavily on visual accompaniments and touring. But now that the colder months are with us, the falsetto wielding crooner has provided a little audible invigoration for you to warm with, releasing a potent remix of the album cut “Waves” with GOOD Music rapper Travi$ Scott in tow.

It certainly marks the first time Scott and Miguel have connected on-record, but there’s a glaring irony to it all. Last night, GOOD Music founder Kanye West announced that he had changed his album’s title to Waves, which makes you wonder whether the release of the remix was just a humble-ish brag over who hit the wave first. You can hear the remix for “Waves” down below, but if you’ve yet to cop Miguel’s Wildheart, we implore you to do so on iTunes today. While he seems fresh out of tour dates at the moment, you can catch him at the major festivals this spring and summer, including Governor’s Ball and Bonnaroo.

Tour Dates:
Mar 04 – 06 @ Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival – Okeechobee, FL
Jun 03 – 05 @ Governors Ball Music Festival – New York, NY
Jun 09 – 12 @ Bonnaroo – Manchester, TN

Mélat Gets Celestial with Her Latest Track “Mercury Retrograde”

Mélat

I honestly didn’t know the music of Mélat all that well before her recent collaboration with Raven Sorvino, but I’m definitely a fan now. Today, the Austin singer/songwriter comes through with her latest track, “Mercury Retrograde.” Yes, I know, nothing is more annoying than your newly “conscious” friends blaming all of their life’s problems on Mercury being in retrograde, but if you’re paying attention there is merit to the phenomenon. As Mercury has been in retrograde most of the month (just ending on the 25th), Mélat uses it to inspire her latest song:

I’ve begun to notice lately that every mercury retrograde, my relationships are in turmoil – situations that wouldn’t occur under normal circumstances are happening. And I’ll admit it, that sometimes I don’t make the best choices but they often make for the best songs.

Listen to Mélat channel that creative energy, below.

Your Old Droog Reminisces On The Old Times Square w/ “42 (Forty Deuce)”

Times Square damn sure isn’t what it use to be. Coney Island emcee, Your Old Droog, comes through with a new joint dedicated to what once was one of the sleazier sections of NYC. Let Droog set the scene and give you that feeling on “42 (Forty Deuce).” Marco Polo comes through strong on the production with a well placed Nu Shooz sample. Brooklyn Emcee ScienZe Releases His Latest LP, #GeorgiaTape

ScienZe

A few months back, Brooklyn emcee ScienZe started releasing music showing love to The Peach State in the lead up to his new Georgia inspired album. ScienZe had this to say about the album:

Neil deGrasse Tyson Fires Back At B.o.B.’s “Flat Earth” Ramblings w/ “Flat To Fact”

Neil deGrasse Tyson Fires Back At B.o.B.'s "Flat Earth" Ramblings w/ "Flat To Facts"

Perhaps some you are as painfully aware of B.o.B.‘s tragically misinformed, and frankly, dumb “flat earth” ramblings over the last few days, even releasing a shade-throwing track in regards to one Neil deGrasse Tyson‘s well-placed and very much needed correction. In short, it rallied the hip-hop-loving scientific community as a unified front in the face of such epic levels of ignorance, best embodied by today’s release; a retaliation, commissioned and endorsed by NDG himself by his nephew, intricately eviscerating both the “flat earth” madness and the man that insists on propagating it through a hefty social media following. Oh, and it should be noted that the track is actually fashioned after Drake‘s now infamous “Back To Back.”

You can hear Neil deGrasse Tyson’s “Flat To Facts” diss track below. Here’s to hoping that the next time a rapper steps to the astrophysicist, his good friend GZA steps out and comes to the rescue (just not before he finally drops that Dark Matter LP!)

Hear Three New Songs From Earl Sweatshirt

Hear Three New Songs From Earl Sweatshirt

Earl Sweatshirt is getting really good at this whole sneak release business. While you lay your head to rest last night, young Sweat took to his Soundcloud page to share some new sounds. The evening began with the release of “Wind In My Sails”; a chipmunk soul-slathered production from Madlib & Flying Lotus, featuring a few diabolical bars from the former Odd Future cohort. Then after a few hours had passed, Earl dropped off a pair of dissonant self-produced instrumentals for the beat junkies of the world. “Bary” finds Earl chopping and screwing Kanye West‘s “Barry Bonds,” while “SKRT SKRT” seems to be a more tranquil offering from the typically brooding rapper.

For those that missed the “Mirror” leak a few weeks back, here’s a bit of a consolation. Hear three new joints from Earl Sweatshirt down below and hold tight for the next transmission. Peep his full itinerary of tour dates to catch him live and direct.

Tour Dates:
Mar 11 @ BUKU Music & Art Project – New Orleans, LA
Mar 12 @ BUKU Music & Art Project – New Orleans, LA

Premiere: Jarreau Vandal Treats Snakehips, Chance The Rapper & Tinashe’s “All My Friends” To A Cerebral Flip

Snakehips ft. Chance The Rapper & Tinashe - "All My Friends" [Jarreau Vandal Remix]

Perhaps some you recall the warmer months of 2015, when the world was a blaze with the luscious lonerism of Snakehips‘ collaborative smash “All My Friends,” featuring the immutable talents of Chance The Rapper and Tinashe. Since then, the track has gone on to claim its rightful position amongst the UK’s top ten singles and has remained in plentiful rotation on this side of the pond as well.

Today, however, we’re graced with the premiere of a fresh new take on “All My Friends,” remixed by Soulection‘s own Jarreau Vandal (who recently flipped Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” with overwhelmingly pleasing results.) Vandal makes the cut his own, alchemizing a cerebral sonic suite out of grand piano chords, punctuating percussion and pulsing synthesizers. Summer may feel like a distant memory in the blustery grips of Jonas, but this should certainly provide you with some necessary and proper recall. Stream Jarreau Vandal’s glitched-out and gorgeous flip of Snakehips, Chance The Rapper and Tinashe’s colossally-dope collaboration “All My Friends” below and if you need a refresher on the frequencies Vandal’s been blasting out into the world, hit his Soundcoud for the full resumé.

God Hop Queen Sa-Roc Flips The Latest Kanye West Smash With A Killer Rework Of "No More Parties In L.A."

God Hop queen Sa-Roc flips the latest Kanye West smash with a killer rework of the Kendrick Lamar assisted “No More Parties In L.A.” In the time-honored rap tradition of jumping on a hot beat, Sa-Roc deftly works her way through the bottom-heavy track with a dense set of bars that begin with your mentions and end with ancient wisdom.

My antennas up but I can never get the connection. Cuz these suckas talking too much static. i’m trying to be Zen and y’all want me to peruse your status updates-No thanks. Obie Iyoha (of The Black Opera) – ‘Midnight Run’ LP [STREAM]

Obie Iyoha (Of The Black Opera) Celebrates The Release Of His 'Midnight Run' Debut Solo LP With A Full Stream Of The 12-Track Project.

Obie Iyoha (of The Black Opera) celebrates the release of his Midnight Run debut solo LP with a full stream of the 12-track project. The album arrived this week, following a string of critically-acclaimed releases from The Black Opera. Digging deep into his bag of tricks, Iyoha puts his lived experience, lyrical versatility and abiding mysticism out front on each track. Taking listeners on a dark and decidedly electric excursion, Iyoha serves up a vivid, trippy compilation that pays tribute to the twitching rhythms of his Michigan stomping grounds and his Nigerian roots.

Midnight Run is a journey through the murky-water trenches of southeast Michigan, otherwise known as ‘Trippyville’, confronting the vices that the night has to offer. The album is laced with live instrumentation over vibey production. It flows through slow, bass-heavy trap, and onto upbeat boom-bap and dance, painting a sonic portrait of a late night excursion through the inner city. Obie Iyoha may be a new name to some, but his stories are vivid enough to bring you into his world and make you feel like it’s your own. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey.

Check the tracks below to stream the Midnight Run LP. Purchase the project via iTunes and Bandcamp.
